Our Doctors

Dr Tony Avery (m)

DM, FRCGP, BMedSci, DCH, DGM, OBE

Dr Avery sees patients on Thursdays.
Qualified from Sheffield University in 1986 and joined the practice in 1992. He is the patient safety lead at the Valley Surgery.

He does joint injections and injections for carpal tunnel syndrome. He is National Clinical Director for Prescribing and a Professor at the School of Medicine at the University of Nottingham, and this involves him in teaching medical students and research.

He is also a Senior Investigator for the National Institute for Health Research . His research interests are in prescribing and patient safety.

Dr Jo Ratan (f)

Bmedsci, BM, BS, DRCOG, DFSRH, MRCGP

Dr Ratan sees patients on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
Dr Ratan qualified from Nottingham University in 1998 and did her GP training in Nottingham.

Before joining the practice in July 2022 she spent most of her career working just over the border in Derbyshire.  She is the practice lead for diabetes.

She has a wide range of clinical interests including Women’s Health, Contraception & Sexual Health, Urology and Mental Health.  She fits contraceptive implants.

Dr Kate Hodson (f)

MBchB, MRCGP, DCH, DRCOG, PGCME

Dr Hodson sees patients on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Qualified from Sheffield in 2006. Joined the practice in 2013 as a partner, having previously worked at both the Valley and Chilwell Meadows as a trainee and locum.

She is a Teaching Fellow at the University of Nottingham and her clinical interests include Child health and Palliative care

Dr Nicola Egan (f)

BM BS BMedSci DCH MRCGP

Dr Egan sees patients on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Qualified from Nottingham University Medical School in 2011. Joined the practice as a partner August 2016 having completed GP training in Reading and Newbury.

Her clinical interests include all areas of general practice.

Dr Sonal Nicum (f)

MBChB, BMedSci, MRCGP, Msc

Dr Nicum sees patients on Tuesdays and Fridays. 
Qualified from Birmingham University in 2006. She completed her GP training in Birmingham. 

She is the practice’s lead for safeguarding children, cancer care and the practice’s Infection Control lead.

Dr Jessica Patel (f)

MBBCH, BSc, MRCGP, DRCOG

Qualified from Cardiff University in 2012. She trained and worked as a GP in Nottingham and joined the practice in 2022 as a partner.

She enjoys all clinical aspects of general practice and has an interest in dermatology.

Dr Nicholas Boddy (m)

BMBS BMedSci MPhil (Engineering) DCH MRCGP

Dr Boddy sees patients on Tuesdays and Thursdays
Qualified from the University of Nottingham in 2013 and completed his GP training in Cambridge in 2020 before moving back to the Nottingham area.

He joined the practice in 2023 and his clinical interests include joint injections, child health and ENT.

He also works as a researcher at the University of Nottingham and teaches medical students at the University of Leicester.

Dr Gina Finch (f)

MbCHb MRCGP, DGM, DRCOG

Dr Finch sees patients on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays
Qualified Leicester 1990. Joined November 2023 having previously worked in Derbyshire.

She is the practice’s lead for safeguarding adults. She is also Trainer of Registrars with the Nottingham VTS.

Dr Victoria Robinson (f)

MBBS MRCGP DRCOG DFSRH

Dr Robinson sees patients on Wednesdays
Qualified from Newcastle University Medical School in 2011. She then returned to the East Midlands to complete her GP training and joined the practice in 2019. Her clinical interests include children’s allergies.

She does joint injections and fits contraceptive coils and implants. She is a retainer GP and does ones session a week on a Wednesday.

Our Nursing Team

The Practice Nurses offer a wide range of services including health advice, respiratory and diabetic checks, blood pressure and coronary heart disease monitoring, family planning and cervical smears, childhood immunisations as well as other nursing tasks such as dressings.

Appointments to see them can be made at reception. We need to know the reason for the appointment so we can give them the appropriate length of time they need.

Helen can help with diabetes, immunisations, contraception, cervical cytology, dressings and travel vaccinations

Jill Cheetham (f)

Practice Nurse

Jill can help with for learning disability checks, asthma, dressings, cervical cytology and travel vaccinations

Sharon McTaggart (f)

Practice Nurse

Sharon can help with respiratory conditions, cervical cytology, contraception, immunisations, travel health, learning disability checks and is our infection control lead.

Polly Southgate (f)

Practice Nurse

Polly can help with diabetes, immunisations, contraception, cervical cytology, dressings and travel vaccinations

Ellie Angelova-Cooper (f)

Research Nurse

Along with our other core research team members Ellie is responsible for the smooth running of our clinical research activities at the practice

Our Clinical Pharmacist Team

Sulvinder Samra (f)

Clinical Pharmacist

Sulvinder is our full time clinical pharmacist employed by the practice.Her role is to help manage long term conditions, reviewing medicines and helping understand medication when discharged from hospital.

She can help with any questions about medicines either face to face or over the phone. Book an appointment with her by calling reception.

Zhi Law (f)

Clinical Pharmacist

Zhi is Clinical Pharmacist for the Nottingham West PCN. She joined the Nottingham West PCN in 2023 providing cover to Chilwell Meadows and Valley Surgery.

She helps with medication queries and reviews especially involved in drugs used for anticoagulation.

She also looks after our care home patients and is part of the Enhanced Health in Care Homes service for the PCN.

Vevila Wen Hong (f)

Clinical Pharmacist

Vevila is Clinical Pharmacist for the Nottingham West PCN. She joined the Nottingham West PCN in 2024 providing cover to Chilwell Meadows and Valley Surgery.

She reviews patients who are new to the practice on medication.

She also looks after our care home patients and is part of the Enhanced Health in Care Homes service for the PCN.

Healthcare Assistant

Michelle Stone is one of our Healthcare Assistants. She is trained to carry out dressings and well being health checks, take blood pressures, give flu vaccinations and take blood for blood tests.

Nazia Rehman

(Acting) Practice Manager

The Practice Manager is responsible for the administration of the practice and is happy to discuss queries, comments and suggestions regarding the day-to-day running of the practice

Ed Longridge

Practice Systems and Research Manager

Ed helps us manage improvements in our communication systems and information technology, including maintaining the practice website and co-ordinating the practice’s research activities.

Nazia Rehman

Deputy Practice Manager

Nazia helps us manage the practice deputising for the Practice Manager and Ed.

Receptionists

Rebecca is our Office Manager and she is helped by Lesley, Wendy, Faye, Mel, Anne, Karen, Caroline, Rebecca and Debbie. They will deal with your queries and appointment requests. They may ask you a few details in order to work out how best to help you but they are bound by the same levels of confidentiality as the doctors.

Practice Secretaries

The Practice secretaries Mel, Sonia, and Rachel will liaise with hospitals for us. One of them is here every day. If you have issues with your liaison with hospitals please speak to them directly.

Our Attached Team

Phlebotomists

Appointments can be made at reception for blood tests with our phlebotomists. They are especially trained to do blood tests. Appointments to see them can be made at reception. They can only take blood in morning appointments as the blood is collected at lunchtime to go to the hospital to be analysed. Many blood tests cannot be left overnight. If the hospital has requested your blood test you can take this to the hospital phlebotomy walk-in clinics. Reception can let you know the times of these or you can click on this link.

District Nurses

We have a team of experienced district nurses who are based at Stapleford Care Centre. They offer a wide variety of services to the housebound and those recently discharged from hospital. This includes care of the young people with disabilities, wound care, injections and advanced and palliative care. They can be contacted by phoning Monday – Friday 8.30am – 5.00pm on 0300 0830100. At bank holidays, weekends, evenings and nights ring 8462377.

Healthy Family team (0-19 years)

The Healthy Family team role is to support children and young people with physical and mental health needs. For basic advice please call 0300 123 3387 Option 4, or the team can be contacted directly  for advice or for a home visit by leaving a message at Dovecote House where they are based on 0115 9522412.

Community Midwife

The Community Midwife team is involved in the care of all mothers before and after the birth of their child. You can self refer to them. They are available for any queries or concerns on 0115 8542264. For the emergency midwife call 07967204126 (9am-5pm) or outside of these times on 0115 9299971.
